Abstract

Handwriting is a highly complex learned behavior that integrates cognitive planning, motor programming and execution, visuospatial control, tactile and proprioceptive feedback, and real-time correction mechanisms.

This article proposes a conceptual framework for studying handwriting as a quantifiable sensorimotor output. To that end, it reviews the historical background of the Psychology of movement —including the work of William James, Aleksandr Luria, Edmund Jacobson, Nina Bull, Gordon Allport, Philip Vernon and Emili Mira i López— and contrasts it with contemporary evidence from the Neuroscience of handwriting, motor control and the digital analysis of handwritten signals.

The central argument is not that motor expression allows psychological characteristics to be inferred automatically. Rather, it argues that the relationship between central processes and motor execution provides mechanistic plausibility for formulating specific, falsifiable hypotheses about what information a handwritten signal may retain.

It explicitly distinguishes between theoretical plausibility, measurement reliability, statistical association, construct validity, predictive capacity and clinical or psychological utility. Finally, it proposes a research agenda based on a priori predictions, within-subject and longitudinal designs, independent measures of the constructs, and out-of-sample validation.

Abstract

Graphology is the study of the unconscious individual deviations in handwriting. It therefore studies handwriting as a nonverbal expressive gesture, revealing the essential, unconscious and primal way in which humans communicate with one another. This gestural language unconsciously conveys emotions, moods, feelings, intelligence and ways of being, beyond what the writer perceives they are communicating.

Abstract

The study of human personality through handwriting is one of humanity’s oldest psychological assessment techniques. Although it originated in ancient China, Graphology emerged as a discipline and as a psychological assessment technique with scientific foundations with the work of Abbé Jean Hippolyte Michon in France in 1879. The emergence two decades ago of a “new computerized Graphology” has revolutionized the field, stripping the old visual graphological methodology of any element of human subjectivity while adding efficiency and scientific rigor.

Abstract

Summary and critical review of the book "L’ABC de la Graphologie" (1930 edition), J. Crépieux-Jamin’s posthumous and definitive work and the foundational treatise of modern French Graphology. It highlights that this work contains principles and "discoveries" that other graphological schools, knowingly or not, have developed as their own.

Abstract

One of the most important schools of Graphology was founded by the Swiss Max Pulver. This prominent graphologist shows us the key that allows the analyst to uncover what handwriting reveals through the symbolic graphic space and two perpendicular lines drawn across it. A journey into the writer’s inner world that is well worth taking.

Abstract

A blind study was conducted to assess the ability of two graphologists and two medical interns with no knowledge of Graphology to evaluate handwritten letters from subjects with a history of suicide attempts by poisoning and letters from healthy volunteers. It concludes that graphological analysis can distinguish letters written by patients who attempted suicide from those of healthy control subjects. Graphology shows an acceptable degree of accuracy and could therefore become an alternative decision-making tool in Psychiatry or Medicine.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there are significant relationships between the measurement of the extraversion construct using Xandró’s projective graphological test and the quantitative measurement proposed by Costa and McCrae’s factor model of personality, popularly known as the “Big Five”. To do so, the Extraversion scale of Costa and McCrae’s NEO PI-R inventory was used, and the handwriting of a sample of 50 university students aged 18 to 28 was analyzed. The results showed a highly significant correlation of .748, with a p-value of 0.01, between the two tests. These results should encourage further research in this field.

Abstract

A graphologist’s training usually relies on a few teachers nearby, on books written in a limited number of languages, and on the experience they can gain from the handwriting of their own compatriots. The universality of Graphology has therefore never been a popular topic of discussion in our professional literature. The panel aims to build a deeper understanding of the general concepts shared by all "graphologies" and to promote discussion of this issue.

Abstract

To evaluate the ability of two graphologists and two medical interns with no knowledge of Graphology to assess handwritten letters from subjects with a history of suicide attempts by poisoning and letters from healthy volunteers, we used a blind study. 40 patients fully recovered from their suicide attempts and 40 healthy volunteers wrote and signed a short text unrelated to their mental state or to suicide. The raters classified the 80 letters as ‘suicide’ or ‘non-suicide’ in an intention-to-treat analysis.

Abstract

For many decades, graphology has been criticised for the lack of the scientific evidence of its validity. Many studies delivered some positive results, however “the general trend of findings is to suggest that graphology is not a valid assessment method”. Although the cited article, which is one of the most well known in the area of the validation research, is old, few has changed since then.

Computer-aided Graphology requires every quantified descriptor to be auditable: the clinical validity of an inference depends on the measuring instrument being free of systematic bias. This paper documents the detection and correction of a measurement bias in the automated margin descriptor of GrafoMetrics v5.

Abstract

Automated detection of handwritten signatures poses a harder problem than it first appears: a signature is not a fixed pattern but a highly variable graphic gesture whose only stable property is its function. This paper presents a diagnostic chronicle of six real failures of the automated signature detector in GrafoMetrics v5, which occurred over six consecutive weeks of clinical use.

Pen pressure: the most human trait of handwriting. Estimating pressure intensity from scanned handwriting and detecting AI-generated handwriting.

Farías, Rodrigo.

Abstract

Pen pressure seems impossible to measure on a scanned page: a ballpoint leaves ink, not force. This work shows that the ink is enough. Pressure intensity is estimated as the ink load per millimetre of stroke, measured against the paper surrounding each letter and scaled to the physical page. The measure reproduced the judgement of an expert graphologist (ρ = 0.91), was highly stable between a person's two pages (ρ = 0.95), was independent of the other descriptors, and forms a dimension of its own, close to vital energy. Unexpectedly, the absence of ink pools flagged AI-generated handwriting, with 1.1 % false alarms. A Spanish version is also available.

Abstract

In this paper a method has been proposed to predict the personality of a person from the baseline, the pen pressure and the letter ‘t’ as found in an individual’s handwriting. These parameters are the inputs to the Artificial Neural Network which outputs the personality trait of the writer. The performance is measured by examining multiple samples.

Abstract

Accuracy of handwriting analysis depends on how skilled the analyst is. Although human intervention in handwriting analysis has been effective, it is costly and prone to fatigue. Hence the proposed methodology focuses on developing a tool for behavioral analysis which can predict the personality traits automatically with the aid of a computer without the human intervention.

Abstract

Among all the unique characteristics of a human being, handwriting carries the richest information to gain the insights into the physical, mental and emotional state of the writer. Graphology is the art of studying and analysing handwriting. Various approaches can be used for this type of computer aided graphology. In this paper, a novel approach of machine learning technique to implement the automated handwriting analysis tool is discussed.
