What Graphology is and what it isn’t
Clear answers to the questions we hear most about Graphology: what it is, how reliable it is, what it’s used for and how we’re bringing it into the age of artificial intelligence.
Graphology
01What is Graphology?
Graphology is a discipline that explores human personality through handwriting and other graphic signs. It is based on the premise that there are meaningful correlations between a person’s handwriting and their unconscious movements and, by extension, their character. Every stroke on paper is a distinctive “fingerprint” that reveals the characteristic way an individual moves through the world, which is why it offers deep insight into their personality traits, motivations and intellectual abilities.
We consider it a prescientific discipline, a projective technique and an art. Prescientific, because it studies personality with a scientific approach that keeps evolving and being refined. Projective, because it interprets the personality that is visually “projected” onto a sheet of paper. And an art, because mastering it requires scholarship, intuition, extensive practice and a deep, holistic understanding of human beings.
At Instituto Grafos we take a modern, scientifically grounded approach, deliberately removed from any esoteric or pseudoscientific practice. We apply Graphology to clinical psychodiagnosis, rigorously supporting psychological or psychiatric diagnoses, and we work with institutions and individuals on critical decisions such as hiring, forensic cases and career guidance.
02Is Graphology a pseudoscience?
As Instituto Grafos practices and teaches it, integrated with technologies such as computer vision and neural networks to develop more objective and reliable methods, Graphology can be classified as a discipline that is prescientific. The difference lies in its methods, its goals and the way it approaches knowledge:
Pseudoscience
- Method: lacks a rigorous scientific method; it does not rely on reproducible experiments, peer review or solid empirical evidence.
- Falsifiability: its claims are immune to refutation and ignore contradicting evidence.
- No progress: its theories remain static, regardless of advances in knowledge.
- False legitimacy: uses scientific terminology to appear legitimate.
Prescientific discipline
- Method: is formulating its methods and actively working toward a complete scientific method.
- Evolution: accumulates evidence, improves its methodologies and is open to review and change.
- Acknowledges its limits: recognizes its current limitations in evidence and method.
- Seeks real legitimacy: builds solid empirical and methodological foundations for its claims.
By adopting more rigorous, objective and reproducible methods, and by submitting its findings to peer review, computer-aided Graphology shows a clear transition toward the status of a prescientific discipline. The accumulation of evidence, the falsifiability of its hypotheses and its openness to change are indicators of that progress.
03How reliable is Graphology?
Graphology is based on how the human mind expresses itself as a whole. Our personality comes through many channels, including handwriting: just as in a conversation the voice is complemented by body language, in Graphology we analyze how the mind expresses itself in the form of handwriting, beyond its content.
As with any psychological test, its reliability depends on several factors:
- A rigorous analysis methodology, with tools that minimize subjectivity in both visual examination and interpretation.
- Appropriate conditions when the test is administered.
- No injuries or motor difficulties affecting handwriting.
- A comfortable, well-lit and welcoming assessment environment.
- The graphologist’s competence and experience: reliability increases with more experienced graphologists.
When these criteria are met, a handwriting test can achieve high levels of reliability for a range of purposes: anticipating aspects of behavior, identifying psychological strengths and weaknesses, and even detecting psychopathology. With technologies like Grafometrics, Graphology is evolving from a subjective art into a tool assisted by computer vision and automated analysis.
04What advantages does Scientific Graphology have over other personality tests?
- Hard to fake: at a time when answers to many tests can be found online, handwriting is far more resistant to manipulation.
- Simple and low-cost: all it takes is a handwriting sample.
- Ideal for remote assessment: it allows accurate assessment without the person being physically present, which is key for remote work and global hiring.
- Holistic view: it reveals aspects of personality that often stay hidden in conventional tests, offering a fuller understanding of a person’s character, motivations and potential.
05What are the limitations of Graphology?
Like any psychological assessment tool, Graphology is not an exact Science but an interpretive approach to human complexity. It should be understood as a valuable map that offers hypotheses about personality, always with the caution and critical thinking that any scientific inquiry demands.
In practice, the most important limitations come from the handwriting analyst’s training and the method they use: inadequate training leads to misapplication. That’s why Grafos offers comprehensive, supervised online training, so our students apply the technique as accurately as possible and help raise the reliability and scientific standing of Graphology.
06Can Graphology predict the future?
No. Graphology is a psychological test: it does not predict the future and has nothing to do with fortune-telling or esoteric practices.
Applications
07What are the fields of application of Scientific Graphology?
- Pre-employment assessment and career development in companies.
- Clinical psychodiagnosis in adults and children, as a complementary tool for mental health professionals.
- Support in psychotherapy, for initial diagnosis and for tracking therapeutic progress.
- Forensic analysis: assessment of dangerousness, motivations, and child custody cases.
- Early, non-invasive detection of emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents.
- Career and vocational guidance.
- Compatibility assessment in couples therapy.
- Building and optimizing work teams.
- Personal and professional coaching.
- Self-knowledge and personal growth.
The handwriting sample
08What do you need for a handwriting analysis?
Almost any handwriting sample will do: a note, a signature, a notebook. But for a professional analysis we recommend:
- At least one letter-size sheet of white, unlined, ungridded paper.
- The writer’s signature included.
- Written with a ballpoint pen (not a fountain pen or pencil).
- A text written by the person, not copied. Any topic is fine.
- Written less than a year ago; for children and adolescents, less than 2 months ago.
Scanned texts can also be analyzed today. Some aspects, such as stroke pressure, may be lost, so we always recommend the original handwriting or analysis with computer algorithms, which make up for that gap with a more objective assessment of other signs.
09Can printed handwriting be interpreted?
Yes. Printed handwriting has all the elements of cursive (line direction, slant, margins, etc.), except the connections between letters. Even those connections can be observed in the traces the pen leaves as it moves from one letter to the next. It can be fully interpreted.
10Does the interpretation change if the writer is left-handed?
No, the principles of interpretation do not change. It is well known, however, that many left-handed people have somewhat more irregular handwriting, with less even spacing between words, because they have to use tools designed mainly for right-handed people.
Technology
11What is Grafometrics?
Grafometrics is the software and analysis model developed by Instituto Grafos to take Graphology through its digital transformation. It analyzes handwriting with computer vision algorithms, artificial intelligence, mathematics and statistics, enabling extremely fast and objective analysis, and standardizes results so they are consistent and comparable.
The concept of “graphoanalysis” is inspired by the methodology of Spanish graphologist Augusto Vels and his theory of handwriting dominants, but Grafometrics takes it to a new level: its main advantage over the traditional technique is reducing subjectivity and human error. Today it is also a complete People Analytics platform, with validated Psychometrics and handwriting biometrics.
